Smith’s Theatrical Prosthetic Deadener is an additive designed to work in concert with Platsil Gel-10 to create a complete theatrical, platinum silicone, prosthetic gel system for the motion picture industry.

The result of 25 years of research and development, with procedures and materials, to achieve greater creative freedom and control over the many physical and visual qualities apparent in living tissue, at the same time creating a safe working environment for both artist and actor.

Smith’s Theatrical Prosthetic Deadener added to PlatSil Gel-10 liquid rubber lowers it’s cure hardness while, at the same time, eliminating specific synthetic movement qualities inherent in the rubber.

It is a chemically stable prosthetic gel system designed specifically to simulate the qualities of softness and movement inherent in living tissue.

PlatSil Gel is accepable for temporary skin contact: however, contact with eyes and mucous membranes should be avoided. Also, to ensure that the user is not unusually sensitive or allergic to components in the gel, patch testing should be conducted prior to larger scale use. PlatSil Gel complies with Consumer Product Safety Commission regulations covering art materials (16 CFR Part 1500) and ANSI D 4236.

Neither liquid or cured rubbers will shrink or decay over time.

Add, by weight, as much as, 250% Smith’s Theatrical Prosthetic Deadener to mixed PlatSil Gel-10 to create any softness of prosthetic gel you like.

Over 30% Smith’s Theatrical Prosthetic Deadener will result in a not paintable sticky cured gel. The stick can be eliminated with powder or by a paintable barrier coat of PlatSil Gel-10.
PlatSil Gel-10 is a perfect barrier coat for painting and creating skins surface tension.

It is therefore not necessary to encapsulate both sides of a prosthetic which means you can achieve much finer edges that a fully encapsulated prosthetic.

Once a gel is powdered the stick cannot be brought back. If you want to use the stickiness of the gel, cover the exposed gel with clean plastic.

Any gel can be glued with standard silicone prosthetic adhesives or you can design the sticky factor into a self-sticking prosthetic or you can use a very thin layer of PlatSil Gel-10 to adhere the prosthetic to the skin.

If PlatSil Gel-10 is used as an adhesive it will bond to the prosthetic and peel off with no solvents.

A self-sticking gel or PlatSil Gel-10 adhered prosthetic frees the skins to move with none of the restriction to the skin inherent in silicone medical adhesives resulting in comfort and remarkable movement qualities.

The prosthetic can be washed in the sink with soap and water ready for another days use, if designed to do so.

All gels are compatible with each other and can be laminated to create multi layered softness' of gel.

Over 250% Smith’s Theatrical Prosthetic Deadener achieves a super gel (IE: fat). However it results in an over deadened gel, relative to living tissue. To return elasticity to a super gel, Smith’s Theatrical Prosthetic Deadener can be substituted, up to 10%, with Smith’s Theatrical Prosthetic Additive #1 without effecting the softness of the gel.

The system is designed for intrinsic and external colouration.

For constant accurate colour control start with SiliClone Human Colouration System for platium silicone prosthetics. It is designed and hand manufactured to the highest laboratory standards for the medical prosthetics industry. Colours are dispensed in graduated syringes for control of colour formulations. Flocking can also be used for colour. Flocking does not effect the opacity or the translucency of the gel.

Prosthetics can also be totally opaque and pre coloured to facilitate a standard theatrical prosthetic make-up procedure.

Edges can be filled or repaired with tiny amounts of Platsil Gel-10 then matted out with Smith’s Theatrical Prosthetic Matting Powder.

Always vacuum materials for consistent results.

Easy reliable mixing. PlatSil Gel 10 is a fast curing rubber. 50/50 mix by weight or by eye.

No delamination problems.

Minimize materials wastage by mixing only what you can use within the given working times.

Working time is generally 5 minutes for PlatSil Gel-10 but is subject to room temperature and % of Smith’s Theatrical Prosthetic Deadener added.

Work slowly and accurately knowing that there will be no evidence of where you stopped and started.
Smith’s 244 Silicone Fluid can be added, sparingly, to thin PlatSil Gel-10 for brushing up thin membranes.

PlatSil 71&73T Thix can be added to thicken gels for heavier lay ups.

Work time can be increased by cooling or freezing the materials. I suggest you keep it in the fridge or in a freezer. Cure time is also excelerated with heat.

PlatSil 71&73R Retarder can also be added, up to 5% to slow work time.

Generally no release is necessary except for ease of removal from mould or actor / patient.
For mould purposes we suggest Vaseline, Ivory soap, Parafilm, wax or what ever works for you. Always test.

When using a brush first rub Vaseline into the fibers before using it. Clean used brush with Smith’s D-Limonene Brush Cleaner. Rinse in 99% alcohol then wash with soap and water.

Do not use rubber glove or rubber sponges. Natural latex rubber will inhibit the cure of the silicone. Some older Urethanes and Aloe Vera are the only other contaminates we have found, to date. Always test.

Do not use adhesive removers such as Detachol because elements in it will break down a cured gel. Always test.

Note:
If your work space is contaminated with natural rubber this system will not work for you. It is safe and reliable to use in any other environment.
